Travis checked the stars and tried to judge the time. If he were lucky, very lucky, he could settle this thing once and for all tonight. Sarah might already have decided she didnât want anything to do with a worn-out gunslinger, but her safety would always be important to him. He would guarantee it before he left.
At first he didnât believe his ears when he heard the riders. Zeke had told Sarah his boss was coming to the line shack for the purpose of rape, not a task a man would need outriders for. He slowed his horse, thinking they couldnât possibly know he was heading for the shack, too. If he could manage to elude them and let them pass, he could follow behind undetected.
He was scouting for a likely hiding place along the road when he realized with alarm that the riders werenât behind him at all. They were beside him, on both sides, and closing fast.
Quickly, he considered his options. He could run for it or stand fast and fight. In view of the oddsâhe estimated at least half a dozen horsesâhe chose to run. He pulled his pistol and jammed his spurs home. His horse bolted, charging into the darkness, but instantly Travis knew heâd made a mistake. Riders were ahead of him, too, and he was riding right into their arms.
God Almighty, it was like they were after him! They materialized out of the darkness, mere shadowy figures racing toward him. Too late to turn and run, he pointed his pistol at the nearest one and fired. The explosion covered the whistling of the lariat, so he never knew the rope was coming until it locked around his chest and jerked him from the saddle.
The ground slammed into his back, stunning him, and the night turned even blacker and the stars disappeared for a moment.
âGot him!â he heard one of them yell, and was vaguely aware of being dragged a way while the roper got his horse under control.
When the stars reappeared, Travis realized some instinct had prevailed and he still held his gun. The riders with the ropesâthere seemed to be two of them nowâloomed over him, silhouetted against the night sky. He couldnât decide which one to shoot, and they wavered, so he aimed somewhere between them and squeezed the trigger.
The explosion sent the men flying from their saddles. Travis blinked, and the images merged into one shouting individual who seemed totally unscathed but almighty furious, judging from the stream of curses.
Travis took aim again, but someone on his other side shouted a warning, and just as he squeezed the trigger a boot appeared from nowhere and stomped on his arm. The shot went wild and the booted foot pinned his arm to the ground while the footâs owner wrested the pistol from his hand.
Travis felt his strength returning, and he braced himself, ready to leap to his feet the instant his assailant released his arm. But instead of releasing him, the burly
